Navigation in which the location is referred to lines on an arbitrary grid, as contrasted with navigation in which locations are referred to meridians and parallels of latitude. Sometimes referred to as the grid system of navigation or G system. A chart used for grid navigation may contain a set of straight lines (grid meridians) parallel to the 0<sup>o</sup> and 180<sup>o</sup> meridians. The lines are used like true meridians on a chart on the Mercator map projection. Great circles and rhumb lines are identical with respect to the grid meridians. Thus, some navigational problems are much simpler when north on the grid is used instead of north on an ordinary chart.
