(2) A method of solving a system of linear equations by starting off with an initial guess at the value of the unknown vector, and the making successive corrections by taking the gradient of the residual sum of squares and taking the correction in the direction of steepest negative gradient. The method has been widely used in the method of least squares.

(1) The line of constant longitude at the center of a graticule. The central meridian is used as a base for constructing the other lines of the graticule. (2) The meridian used as y-axis in computing tables for a State Plane Coordinate system. The central meridian of the coordinate system usually passes close to the geometric center of the region or zone for which the tables are computed but, to avoid using negative values, is given a large positive value which must be added to all x-coordinates. (3) That line, on a graticule, which represents a meridian and which is an axis of symmetry for the geometric properties of the graticule.
