(1) An eccentricity (of a rotational ellipsoid) which is a real number. A rotational ellipsoid whose eccentricity is an imaginary number is a prolate, rotational ellipsoid; the absolute value of the eccentricity is called the prolateness. (2) The eccentricity of a rotational ellipsoid.
Industry:Earth science
The amount of luminous energy per unit time moving, at a given point, in a given direction per unit solid angle and per unit projected area perpendicular to the specified direction. Formerly called luminosity, and often still so called by astronomers. The corresponding term for electromagnetic radiation in general is radiance.
Industry:Earth science
Any station, in a network of horizontal or vertical control, identified on a photograph and used for correlating the data obtained from that photograph.
Industry:Earth science
The point, in the orbit of a satellite of the Earth, at which the satellite (or its center of mass) is closest to the Earth's center of mass.
Industry:Earth science
A large, elevated part of the crust, coinciding approximately with a continent.
Industry:Earth science
A written notice to an owner of an intent to purchase certain lands or interests therein for a stipulated amount of consideration. This is a prerequisite to condemnation.
Industry:Earth science
The phase of the optical transfer function.
Industry:Earth science
A reflecting telescope in which radiation reflected from the paraboloidal primary mirror is redirected by a small, flat mirror placed at a 45o angle to the optical axis; this sends the radiation off at right angles to the axis of the primary mirror and to the observer. A Newtonian telescope is one of the simplest to construct. However, it is usually much longer than telescopes of different design, and the observer's position (near the front of the telescope) is not convenient.
