A ring, usually made of rubber or rubber compound, that fits around a wheel and serves as a cushion at the point the wheel touches the surface over which it rolls. Most tires are made so that they form a chamber which is filled with compressed air. The compressed air acts as a shock absorber.

A rotary selector valve in a pneumatic deicer system. The distributor valve, installed between the air pump and the deicer boots, sequences the inflation and deflation of the boots to break the ice that has formed on the leading edges of the wings and tail surfaces. Air flowing over the surface gets under the broken ice and blows it away.
