An optoelectronic device that emits visible light when electrons pass through it. P and N impurities are mixed with such chemical compounds as indium phosphide, gallium arsenide, and zinc selenide to form a P-N junction.
When the P-N junction is reverse-biased (the negative terminal of the voltage source is connected to the P-material), no electrons flow, and the LED remains dark. But when the diode is forward-biased (the negative terminal of the voltage source connected to the N-material), electrons flow through the LED, and it emits light.
Industry:Aviation
An optoelectronic device that interrupts a beam of light being shone on a photoelectric cell. The chopper changes the steady DC output of the photoelectric cell into pulsating DC that can be easily amplified.
Industry:Aviation
An optoelectronic device used to couple electronic circuits by using electromagnetic radiation, either visible or invisible. The input circuit contains some form of light source, usually a light-emitting diode (LED). The intensity of the light is determined by the amount of current flowing in the input circuit.
The output circuit contains a photodiode, phototransistor, or light-dependent resistor. The light source and light sensor are mounted in a light-tight housing, so the light emitted by the source striking the sensor controls the output of the coupled circuit.
Industry:Aviation
An organic compound which contains only carbon and hydrogen. The vast majority of fossil fuels such as gasoline and turbine-engine fuel are hydrocarbons.
Industry:Aviation
An organization or person involved in the business of transporting people or cargo by air for compensation or hire.
Industry:Aviation
An organization which sets various standards, called ASTM standards, used in the aircraft industry.
Industry:Aviation
An organized oceanic route structure, incorporating reduced lateral spacing between routes, in which composite separation is authorized.
Industry:Aviation
An orifice installed in a fluid flow system to decrease the amount of fluid allowed to flow under a specific amount of pressure.
Industry:Aviation
An orifice, or hole, having a specific diameter, length, and approach and departure angles. A calibrated orifice is used to control the amount of fluid that can flow under a specific pressure. Carburetor metering jets are calibrated orifices.
