A captive flying machine made of a lightweight framework covered with paper or cloth. The kite is tethered to the ground and is held up by aerodynamic lift produced as air flows over its surface.
Industry:Aviation
A carburetor that mounts on the top of a reciprocating engine. Air entering the engine flows downward through the carburetor.
Industry:Aviation
A card usually mounted near an instrument to show the amount of error in the instrument. Correct information can be obtained by reading the instrument and applying the correction shown on the calibration card.
Industry:Aviation
A casting made in a reusable metal mold. Many aircraft engine crankcases are cast in permanent-molds because their walls can be made thinner than similar walls made by sand casting.
Industry:Aviation
A cathode in a vacuum tube that is heated by a filament which is not a part of the cathode. The cathode is made in the form of a metal tube whose surface is coated with a material that emits electrons when it is heated. The filament, a small resistance-wire heater inside the cathode, heats it but does not touch it. Indirectly heated cathodes allow the filament to be heated with alternating current without causing the hum that would be present if the AC passed through the cathode itself.
Industry:Aviation
A cathode of an electron tube which is covered with a material that emits a great many electrons when it is heated.
Industry:Aviation
A cathode-ray oscilloscope with two electron beams which produce two traces on the screen at the same time. Dual-beam oscilloscopes may be used to observe the signals on the input and the output of a portion of a circuit at the same time.
Industry:Aviation
A cathode-ray tube used to display information. Cathode-ray oscilloscopes and computer video monitors use display tubes.
Industry:Aviation
A ceiling classification applied when the ceiling height has been estimated by the observer. The term estimated also applies when the ceiling has been determined by some other method, but because of the specified limits of time, distance, or precipitation conditions, a more descriptive classification cannot be applied.
Industry:Aviation
A ceiling classification applied when the ceiling value has been determined by instruments or the known heights of unobscured portions of objects other than natural landmarks.
