Una división del año en función de algunos fenómenos que se repiten regularmente, por lo general astronómicos o climáticas. Por ejemplo, en el hemisferio norte, el invierno se dice que comienza en el solsticio de invierno y al final en el equinoccio vernal, cuando llega la primavera, que abarca los meses de diciembre, enero y febrero. En los trópicos, se la seca y la temporada de lluvias, dependiendo de la cantidad de precipitación.
